چکیده

E-mail address (for F. Hazin): [email protected] depths between 5 and 10 m. Bottom longlines consisted of a multifilament mainline (6 mm in diameter) with up to 100 secondary lines, each approx. 5 m in length and constructed from 3-mm diameter monofilament attached to a wire snood (1 m in length). Types of hooks varied among brands, but rela tive sizes (i.e. 9/0) remained similar. The main baits were sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) and mackerel (Scomber spp.), although some other species, including sting ray (Aetobarus nari nari) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) were occasionally used. Long lines were set on the continental shelf at depths between 10 and 60 m, but most sets were shallower than 40 m.

Structure and Dynamics of the Shark Assemblage off Recife, Northeastern Brazil

Understanding the ecological factors that regulate elasmobranch abundance in nearshore waters is essential to effectively manage coastal ecosystems and promote conservation. However, little is known about elasmobranch populations in the western South Atlantic Ocean. An 8-year, standardized longline and drumline survey conducted in nearshore waters off Recife, northeastern Brazil, allowed us to ...

Temporal resolution and spectral sensitivity of the visual system of three coastal shark species from different light environments.

Visual temporal resolution and scotopic spectral sensitivity of three coastal shark species (bonnethead Sphyrna tiburo, scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini, and blacknose shark Carcharhinus acronotus) were investigated by electroretinogram. Temporal resolution was quantified under photopic and scotopic conditions using response waveform dynamics and maximum critical flicker-fusion frequency (CF...

Mercury accumulation in sharks from the coastal waters of southwest Florida.

As large long-lived predators, sharks are particularly vulnerable to exposure to methylmercury biomagnified through the marine food web. Accordingly, nonlethal means were used to collect tissues for determining mercury (Hg) concentrations and stable isotopes of carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) from a total of 69 sharks, comprising 7 species, caught off Southwest Florida from May 2010 throu...

Longevity of Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks Rhizoprionodon terraenovae and Blacknose Sharks Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean based on tag-recapture data and direct age estimates

Longevity of Rhizoprionodon terraenovae and Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean was examined using direct age estimates from vertebral sections and tag-recapture data. Time-at-liberty ranged from 7.7-14.0 years (mean =10.1) for R. terraenovae and 10.9-12.8 years (mean =11.9) for C. acronotus. Maximum estimated longevity was determined to be 19.8 years through tag-recaptur...

Biological aspects of sharks caught off the Coast of Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil.

One hundred seventeen specimens of sharks were caught along the coast of Pernambuco State, Northern Brazil, between May 2004 and May 2007, among which 86 were blacknose sharks, Carcharhinus acronotus, enabling a more detailed study of the species. Blacknose sharks were caught in the 2 study areas along the Boa Viagem/Piedade and Paiva beaches, accounting for the highest relative abundance among...
